During Fire Prevention Week, the
fire department staff takes the Fire Prevention Program to each of the schools
in Brighton. Our Fire Prevention Programs includes: Age appropriate training
for each class regarding what to do in an emergency or in the event of a fire, Provide
tour and training in the Smoke Trailer, Teach the children the 5 things
never to play with (stoves, matches, fire places, lighters, and candles) Reminders
to have grown ups to change batteries in smoke detectors and CO (carbon
monoxide) detectors and to test each unit on a monthly basis. Our Smoke Trailer
was donated by Coleman’s Country Campers in Hartford, IL. The fire department
membership has remodeled the entire trailer inside and out. The interior has
been outfitted with smoke machines and audio / video equipment to enable us to
present fire and life safety programs. The Smoke Trailer is a multifunctional
unit. The children gather inside so they can view fire prevention DVDs and
answer any questions. If age appropriate, the smoke machine can be utilized to
simulate the look and feel of a house fire and allows us to demonstrate what we
look like in our full fire gear and breathing apparatus. Our newest member to
the fire department staff is SPARKY the Fire Dog! Sparky visits schools and a
variety of other fire dept functions. Sparky sings, dances, and is a HUGE part
of the fire prevention team.We has also seen some clowns running around
Brighton. Yes you heard right. The fire prevention clowns have been helping the
fire department with training and a few laughs. The clowns come to us from the
Hartford Fire Department. Like Brighton, the Hartford Fire Department donates
their time and effort to help teach our children the funny side of fire prevention.
We also visit other local fire departments including Godfrey, Medora, Shipman,
Jerseyville, Meadowbrook, and Alton.
